Horvat Sumaqa, an archaeological site on the southern slope of Mount Carmel, preserves the remains of a late Roman synagogue (2nd–4th century), uncovered by Israeli excavations. It bears witness to a rural Jewish community established in the foothills of the Carmel during the Mishnaic and Talmudic period.
