An Alsatian village bordering Basel, Hégenheim welcomed Jewish families expelled from the city of Basel, forming a documented community with a synagogue and cemetery as early as the seventeenth century. This village illustrates the phenomenon of Jewish communities on the 'periphery' that formed around cities that denied them entry.
