Guelmim (Goulimine), known as the 'gateway to the Sahara,' was one of the great caravan trade centers of southern Morocco. A Jewish community played a key role in commercial exchanges with sub-Saharan Africa (gold, salt, gum arabic, slaves) since the 17th century. These families emigrated to Agadir, Casablanca, and Israel during the 20th century.
