Doura-Europos is a fortified Hellenistic city on the Syrian Euphrates whose 3rd-century CE synagogue is famous for its figurative wall paintings — among the oldest in Jewish art — depicting biblical scenes. The site, excavated in the 1920s–1930s, also yielded an early Christian church and a temple of Mithras.
