A Greek city founded in Cyrenaica (present-day eastern Libya), Cyrene was home from the Hellenistic period to an important Jewish community, one of the largest of the ancient diaspora. The Jews of Cyrene participated in the Kitos War (115–117 CE) under Trajan, a catastrophic event for the Jewish presence in Cyrenaica.
