The first impetus came from Odessa. In the aftermath of the 1881 pogroms, young Russian Jewish intellectuals founded the Am Olam movement — "the eternal people," an expression drawn from an essay by Peretz Smolenskin. Unlike the Bilou, who directed their adherents toward Palestine, the activists of Am Olam chose America as their land of refoundation. Its ideological quarrels, a destructive fire, and the exhaustion of enthusiasm led it to dissolution around 1887-1888. It was in southern New Jersey, in Cumberland and Salem counties, that the movement experienced its greatest longevity. Established on sandy lands near Vineland, it brought together families of Russian immigrants who combined market gardening and wine production with supplementary work in sewing workshops, according to a mixed model that ensured their survival where agriculture alone had failed.

Around Alliance, Carmel, Rosenhayn, Norma, Brotmanville, and Mizpah developed. These colonies benefited from proximity to Philadelphia and New York, markets for their products, and constant support from urban Jewish philanthropy. Synagogues, schools, and cooperatives were built there. The model that prevailed was not the isolated farm but the semi-industrial village: the family cultivated a few hectares while working with needle in small clothing factories established on site. This pragmatic compromise, far removed from the collectivist utopia of the early days, allowed these communities to span several generations. The decisive turning point came from the fortune of Baron Maurice de Hirsch (1831-1896), financier of Ottoman railways who became the greatest Jewish philanthropist of his time. Convinced that emigration and agricultural colonization were the solution to the misery of Eastern European Jews, he endowed in 1891 the Baron de Hirsch Fund, established in New York, with considerable capital. The Fund financed the settlement, training, and credit of colonists, refusing pure assistance in favor of aid to self-sufficiency.

In 1891, the Fund founded Woodbine, in Cape May County in New Jersey, designed as a model city blending agriculture, industry, and education. In 1894, the Baron de Hirsch Agricultural School was created there, the first Jewish school of agronomy in America, which trained generations of farmers and technicians. Woodbine equipped itself with factories, a municipality — becoming in 1903 the first borough administered entirely by Jews in the United States —, synagogues and a mutual aid network. It embodied the dreamed synthesis of return to the land and industrial modernity. Rather than establishing new closed colonies, it granted mortgage loans to individual farmers, dispatched agricultural advisors, published the Yiddish and English periodical The Jewish Farmer (Der Yidisher Farmer) from 1908 onward, and organized cooperatives for insurance, credit, and marketing.

Under its impetus, the number of Jewish families established on farms in the United States grew substantially, reaching several tens of thousands of people on the eve of the First World War. Lasting concentrations formed in Connecticut — around Colchester, Chesterfield, and the Connecticut Valley, where Jews became dairy farmers, poultry producers, and tobacco growers — as well as in New York State, notably in Sullivan and Ulster counties. Poultry farming became an emblematic specialty there, foreshadowing the major egg-laying centers of Toms River and Vineland in the following decades. The decline of the colonies proper was inexorable. The collectivist colonies of the 1880s had almost entirely disappeared by 1900. The semi-industrial villages of New Jersey survived longer, but rural exodus, urbanization, and assimilation of American-born generations gradually emptied their farms. Woodbine lost its predominantly Jewish character after World War II; its Baron de Hirsch Agricultural School closed in 1917. Jewish poultry farming in New Jersey reached its peak in the 1940s and 1950s — sustained by the arrival of refugees from Nazism — before collapsing in the face of agro-industry in the 1960s.

What remains of this history are cemeteries, rural synagogues, place names, and vivid Memory sustained by descendants and historians. Family tradition often idealizes the figure of the heroic pioneer; the archival item nuances this narrative, revealing the scale of failures, yet confirms the authenticity of rare idealism. Baron Maurice de Hirsch (1831-1896) — Moritz Freiherr von Hirsch auf Gereuth. Bavarian financier who grew wealthy in Ottoman railways, he became the great patron of Jewish agricultural colonization. After his son's death, he devoted his fortune to the emigration and settlement of Eastern European Jews, establishing the Baron de Hirsch Fund in 1891 and the Jewish Colonization Association. He financed Woodbine, schools, and loans. His legacy durably shaped American and Argentine Jewish agriculture.

Clara de Hirsch (1833-1899) — born Bischoffsheim. Wife of the baron, she continued his philanthropic work after 1896, endowing educational institutions and homes for immigrant women. A discerning heiress and administrator, she ensured the continuity of agricultural and social foundations bearing her husband's name, making the Hirsch couple one of the pillars of transatlantic Jewish mutual aid in the late nineteenth century.

William Frey (1839-1888) — Vladimir Konstantinovitch Geins. Former Russian officer turned positivist thinker and vegetarian, he was the ideological inspiration for the communal colony of New Odessa in Oregon. His mystical and rationalist doctrine marked the collectivist experiment, but also sparked divisions. A representative figure of Russian utopianism transplanted to America, he embodies the most radical and spiritual wing of the Am Olam movement.

Judah Wechsler (dates uncertain, active circa 1880-1890) — Rabbi of Saint Paul, Minnesota, he organized material support for the colonies of Painted Woods and Devils Lake in North Dakota. Mobilizing community charity, he sought to anchor Russian families on difficult lands. His commitment illustrates the role of Reform rabbis in the Midwest in patronizing agricultural pioneers, despite the ultimate failure of his colonies.

Michael Heilprin (1823-1888) — Polish-born scholar, encyclopedist, and abolitionist, he devoted himself tirelessly to aiding Am Olam settlers and pogroms refugees. Exhausting his health and means in this cause, he was one of the rare American intellectuals to concretely defend the Jewish agrarian ideal. His memory remains attached to selfless devotion to the first pioneers.

Sabato Morais (1823-1897) — Rabbi of Philadelphia, hazan of the Mikveh Israel congregation and cofounder of the Jewish Theological Seminary, he supported colonies in southern New Jersey, notably Alliance and Carmel. His moral authority and network facilitated their financing and religious oversight. He embodies the link between the American Jewish establishment and the humble pioneers of the land.

Jewish agricultural colonies in the United States were the expression of a powerful dream: to wrest the Jewish people from commerce and the workshop in order to root them in the soil. From the flooded Louisiana of 1881 to the tenacious villages of New Jersey, from the mystical collectivism of New Odessa to the philanthropic rationality of Woodbine and the Jewish Agricultural Society, this movement traversed half a century of American history while embracing all forms of idealism and pragmatism.

Its material legacy was modest: most colonies perished, and the Jewish farmer never became a mass figure. But its moral and symbolic legacy was considerable. It formed men, tested methods, and demonstrated the possibility of a Jewish life turned toward the land — a demonstration that would later nourish the adventure of the kibbutzim in the Land of Israel. Between utopia and the archive, between the heroic narrative of descendants and the accounting of bankruptcies, there subsists a truth: that of a generation which, against all likelihood, sought to make a future grow in foreign soil.
