Clermont-Ferrand, capital of Auvergne, attests a Jewish presence since late Antiquity — the Council of Clermont of 535 mentions the Jews of the city. The Merovingian community was the subject of controversies with local bishops. The Jewish presence continued until the royal expulsions of the 14th century.
