The Swabian town of Bad Buchau in Baden-Württemberg, formerly under the authority of the imperial abbesses of Buchau, welcomed a Jewish community under ecclesiastical protection from the sixteenth century onward. A historic synagogue is preserved there, bearing witness to a well-established communal life.
