Braga, the ancient capital of the Roman province of Gallaecia and a major archiepiscopal see, possesses traces of a Jewish presence among the oldest in Portugal, attested as early as Late Antiquity (4th–5th century) and continued throughout the Middle Ages. The medieval Jewish community, active in trade and medicine, was forced into conversion or exile during the expulsion decree of 1496 promulgated by King Manuel I.

This book bears no memory day yet. The sources that document Braga give years and centuries, never a day; we do not invent one.
