An Alsatian village in the Bas-Rhin, Bouxwiller harbored one of the most significant rural Jewish communities in Alsace during the 17th–19th centuries, under the protection of the counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg and later the Rohan. The synagogue and cemetery bear witness to an organized communal life.
