Bogotá, the colonial capital of New Granada, sheltered converso families in the 16th–17th centuries. Some were prosecuted by the Inquisition tribunal of Cartagena, which had jurisdiction over the viceroyalty. These Judaizers concealed their practices under the guise of Catholicism.
