An oasis of the Saoura in the present-day wilaya of Béchar, Béni Abbès sheltered Jewish merchants who participated in exchange circuits between southern Morocco and the Algerian Sahara in the 18th–19th centuries. The Jewish presence there was seasonal and commercial.
