Armant (Hermonthis), a small town in Upper Egypt on the west bank of the Nile, is attested as the seat of a Jewish community in Greek papyri from the 1st–4th centuries. These documents, preserved in Egyptological collections, bear witness to Jewish settlement in the towns of the Egyptian chôra.
