Aleksandrów Łódzki (Aleksander in Yiddish) was the seat of the Aleksander Hassidic dynasty, founded in the nineteenth century, which became one of the largest in the Polish Jewish world with tens of thousands of followers. The town was home to a vibrant Jewish community of weavers, merchants, and artisans. During the Shoah, the Jews of Aleksander were deported to Chelmno and the extermination camps; the community disappeared entirely.
