Akhaltsikhe (Akhaltsikhé), the administrative center of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region in southern Georgia, sheltered a Georgian Jewish community ("Gruzim") dating back at least to the 16th century. After the Russian conquest of 1829, Turkish-speaking Ottoman Jews settled there, forming a distinct community alongside the Gruzim. The city counted several active synagogues until the 20th century.
