Adwa (Adua), a town in the Ethiopian Tigray, is celebrated for the battle of 1 March 1896, in which Ethiopia inflicted a decisive defeat on the Italian army. The Tigray region, like other mountainous areas of northern Ethiopia, was home to Beta Israel populations (Ethiopian Jews) in surrounding villages, though the community of Adwa itself was modest.
