Oldest institution of higher education in Israel, founded in 1906 by sculptor Boris Schatz following a resolution of the seventh Zionist Congress. Named after the biblical Bezalel, it aimed to create a Zionist artistic style blending Jewish, Oriental and European traditions. It became a public institution in 1969 and is the national academy of arts and design.
