Founded in 1953-1954 under the name American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs by Isaiah L. "Si" Kenen, the group adopted the name American Israel Public Affairs Committee in 1959. Based in Washington D.C., AIPAC is the leading pro-Israel lobbying group before the legislative and executive branches of the United States.
