Successeur de son père comme rebbe des hassidim de Zvolin (1888), il s'installa vers 1891 à Modrzyc et y fonda la dynastie de Modzhitz. Auteur du recueil homilétique « Divrei Yisrael » sur la Torah, il fut surtout un immense compositeur de mélodies : la tradition rapporte qu'il composa un long nigun pendant l'amputation de sa jambe sans anesthésie (1913).
