Grand prêtre peu avant la destruction du Second Temple, il est crédité par le Talmud (Baba Batra 21a) d'avoir institué des maîtres d'école dans chaque district et chaque ville pour les enfants dès six-sept ans — fondement de l'éducation juive universelle. Le Talmud dit que « sans Yehoshua ben Gamla, la Torah aurait été oubliée en Israël ». Il fut tué durant la première guerre judéo-romaine.
