Cinéaste née en Iran et juive iranienne, partie d'Iran à l'âge de 6 ans après la révolution de 1979. Diplômée de Brown (sémiotique) et de The New School. Son premier long-métrage documentaire, « Be Like Others » (2008), sur les personnes transgenres en Iran, fut présenté au festival de Sundance 2008 et primé (prix spécial Teddy à la Berlinale), et nommé aux Emmy.
