Né à Londres dans une famille juive de l'East End (fils de Joel Joel, tenancier de la taverne King of Prussia ; sa mère Kate Isaacs était sœur de Barney Barnato). Avec ses frères Jack et Woolf, il rejoint son oncle Barney Barnato sur les champs diamantifères de Kimberley et fait fortune. À la mort de Barnato (1897), il hérite de l'empire financier, devient administrateur de De Beers et président de la Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company.
