Originaire d'Alexandrie, il fut élevé au sacerdoce par Hérode le Grand vers 23 av. EC afin que le mariage d'Hérode avec sa fille Mariamne (II) ne fût pas jugé mésalliance. Trois de ses fils — Joazar, Eleazar et Simeon — occupèrent tour à tour la fonction de grand prêtre (Joazar deux fois). La famille est associée à la secte des Boéthusiens, proche des Sadducéens.
