Pendant la Shoah il gagna la Lituanie puis, via les visas de transit, le Japon (Kobe) et Shanghai avec de nombreux réfugiés, avant de s'établir aux États-Unis. Il est réputé pour son enseignement sur la prière et le soutien aux réfugiés.
