Né à Saverne, il fut rabbin de Lauterbourg (1834), puis Grand Rabbin de Nancy (1844) avant de succéder à Marchand Ennery comme Grand Rabbin du Consistoire central de France (1853). Il organisa en 1856 la Conférence des grands rabbins de France et publia des ouvrages d'instruction religieuse ; réputé écrire « le français comme un académicien et l'hébreu comme Isaïe ».
