Né à Ferrare le 17 mars 1904, issu d'une ancienne famille juive de la ville. Opposant au fascisme, il est interné au camp d'Urbisaglia (1940-1941). Après la Libération il devient commissaire puis président de la Communauté israélite de Ferrare. Bibliophile réputé, il rassemble une collection remarquable (notamment les trois éditions originales de l'Orlando furioso de l'Arioste et des livres hébraïques/rares) qui fut ensuite acquise par la Bibliothèque de l'Université de Bologne.
