Rabbin pieux et charitable de Béja, réputé pour sa science de la Torah et des guérisons. Inhumé à Testour, où son mausolée fait l'objet d'un important pèlerinage nord-africain annuel (Souccot). La tradition lui donne pour descendant le rabbin David Chaouat (mort à Sousse en 1935), l'une des figures représentatives du judaïsme tunisien.
