Fondateur d'une importante maison de banque juive à Bagdad, très influent à la cour des califes abbassides. Sous al-Muʿtaḍid, il aurait déjoué le projet d'un vizir de faire mettre à mort de nombreux Juifs. Avec son beau-père Joseph b. Phinehas, il soutint le gaon dans le conflit qui opposa vers 909–916 l'académie de Poumbedita à l'exilarque Ukba.
