D'après le dictionnaire onomastique d'Abraham I. Laredo (« Les noms des Juifs du Maroc »), Moshe Abutam fut chef des Juifs de Fès et conseiller du sultan Moulay Bou Hassoun au XVIᵉ siècle. Le nom Abutam/Aboutam est d'origine berbère et signifie « père des huit ».
