Né à Mayence en 1800, apprenti chez le banquier Hayum Salomon Goldschmidt, il développa une maison de banque internationale (Amsterdam, Anvers, Bruxelles, Londres, Paris). En janvier 1872 il joua un rôle majeur dans la fondation de la Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas (Paribas). Sa famille s'allia aux Goldschmidt, Bamberger, Erlanger, Cahen d'Anvers et Hirsch.
