Peintre israélien né en Ukraine, l'un des principaux promoteurs de l'art moderne dans le Yishouv puis l'État d'Israël. Cofondateur du groupe « Ofakim Hadashim » (Nouveaux Horizons), il a développé un style d'« abstraction lyrique ». Lauréat du prix Israël de peinture en 1959 ; premier artiste israélien à avoir une exposition personnelle au Stedelijk Museum d'Amsterdam (1955).
