Hakham séfarade, élu grand-rabbin (Rishon le-Zion) de Jérusalem en 1813, fonction qu'il occupa jusqu'à sa mort. Auteur de recueils de responsa et d'homélies. Ses quatre fils furent tous des érudits rabbiniques et son petit-fils Israël Moïse Hazan poursuivit la dynastie.
