Né à Monastir en 1505, il s'installe à Salonique en 1534 puis à Constantinople vers 1550, où il enseigne à la yeshiva fondée par Doña Gracia Nasi. Il fut l'une des grandes autorités halakhiques de l'Empire ottoman au XVIᵉ siècle. Ses responsa (She'elot u-Teshuvot) traitent d'éthique, d'affaires, de philosophie religieuse, d'astronomie et de mathématiques ; ils furent imprimés de son vivant (Salonique/Constantinople, 1557–1573) puis réédités.
