Né à Oran dans une famille juive, il étudie la médecine à Paris puis se convertit au catholicisme en 1958, entre chez les bénédictins (1961), est ordonné prêtre (1967) et participe à la reconstruction du monastère d'Abou Gosh en Israël dont il devient l'abbé (1999). En 2003, il est nommé évêque auxiliaire du Patriarcat latin de Jérusalem pour les catholiques d'expression hébraïque.
