Jacob Lasry, riche négociant (bétail, grains), d'une famille venue du Maroc (via Gibraltar) après la reprise d'Oran à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, devint sous la conquête française un important propriétaire et président du consistoire israélite d'Oran. Il conserva des liens avec les Juifs hispanophones du Maroc et de Gibraltar. Son cas a fait l'objet d'études universitaires (Archives Juives, Cairn).
