Né à Smarhon, d'origine juive lituanienne, d'abord formé à la rabbanout, il se tourne vers la sculpture à près de 40 ans, étudie à Vilna puis à Moscou. Considéré dans les années 1920-30 comme l'un des grands sculpteurs russes ; ami de Chagall. Déporté au Kazakhstan.
