Grand prêtre nommé par le légat Quirinius (6 apr. J.-C.), déposé par le procurateur Valerius Gratus vers 15. Il resta ensuite très influent : cinq de ses fils (Éléazar, Jonathan, Théophile, Anan/Ananus, Matthias) et son gendre Joseph Caïphe se succédèrent au souverain pontificat. La famille (« Bet Hanin ») figure parmi les familles de grands prêtres critiquées dans le Talmud.
