Considéré comme le plus grand chanteur et musicien juif boukhariote. Formé par ses frères aînés, il chanta à la synagogue dès l'âge de neuf ans et apprit le style classique du shashmaqam ainsi que plusieurs instruments (dont le doira). Il travailla dans les années 1920 avec son frère Mikhael, lui aussi grand chanteur d'Asie centrale.
