Membre de la famille juive Gabbai de Bagdad, il fut nommé ṣarrāf bāshī (banquier en chef) du gouverneur et exerça une influence considérable. Après le retour en faveur de la faction arménienne, il fut exilé, et lui et son frère furent exécutés à la suite de calomnies. La famille Gabbai comptait de nombreuses branches à Bagdad et en Inde.
