Médecin issu d'une dynastie médicale séfarade de la péninsule Ibérique, établi à Amsterdam. Étudia à Bordeaux. Figure dirigeante de la communauté portugaise d'Amsterdam : il finança la presse hébraïque de Menasseh ben Israël et encouragea Rabbi Moshe Rivkash à composer ses gloses 'Be'er ha-Golah' sur le Choulhan Aroukh. Rembrandt et Jan Lievens firent son portrait.
