Arrivé à Calcutta en 1821 depuis Bagdad avec son père Joseph Ezra et son frère Nissim, il bâtit une immense fortune immobilière et devint le plus grand propriétaire foncier de Calcutta. Chef de file de la communauté juive baghdadie du Bengale ; la famille (aussi dite Khalif/Horesh à Bagdad) fut la plus influente de la communauté.
