Né dans une famille juive bourgeoise d'Ivrée (père Salvador Benedetto, mère Elvira Sacerdoti, de Modène), il fonde en 1896 « Ing. C. Olivetti & Co. » et lance en 1908-1909 la première production italienne de machines à écrire, cherchant à faire de sa firme l'une des plus avancées d'Europe, socialement comme techniquement.
