Né à Francfort-sur-le-Main en 1805, il fonda avec son frère Léopold en juin 1842 la banque d'affaires A. J. Stern & Cie, 33 rue Laffitte à Paris, l'une des dix grandes banques d'affaires d'Europe, en réseau avec les Stern Brothers de Londres. Neveu de Salomon de Rothschild, il fit de la maison Stern l'une des puissantes dynasties bancaires juives du XIXe siècle.
