Né Aharon Rabinowitz, il hébraïsa son nom en Yariv. Chef du renseignement militaire israélien (AMAN) de 1964 à 1972, il joua un rôle central dans la préparation de la guerre des Six Jours, puis fut conseiller antiterroriste du Premier ministre, député (Maarah), ministre des Transports puis de l'Information. En 1977 il fonda le Center for Strategic Studies de l'université de Tel-Aviv (futur INSS).
