Disciple de Dov Ber, le Maggid de Mezritch, il fonde vers 1762 la première maison de prière hassidique de Karlin, premier foyer du hassidisme en Lituanie. Il prône l'étude de la Torah et de la Michna et le rejet de l'ascétisme. Son piyyout « Yah Ekhsof » est resté célèbre.
