Descendant de Juifs français exilés venus en Castille en 1306, il étudia et enseigna à Salamanque et fut astronome royal de Jean II de Portugal. Ses tables astronomiques (l'Almanach Perpetuum) servirent à la navigation portugaise et espagnole. Après l'expulsion, il gagna le Portugal puis, en 1497, l'Afrique du Nord (Tunis), où il rédigea son ouvrage historique.
