Rabbin de la Renaissance, il étudia à Venise (auprès d'Élie Levita et du médecin Vittore Trincavella) puis fut correcteur pour l'imprimerie Bragadin avant d'officier comme rabbin à Crémone et à Vérone (1584-1592), où il dirigea une yeshiva réputée. Il est surtout connu pour son commentaire de la Torah Minhah Belulah (Vérone, 1594), fondé sur les midrashim, qui contient un témoignage sur l'autodafé du Talmud en 1553.
