Fils de David Gradis, il développa à partir de 1728 la maison « David Gradis et fils », obtint l'exclusivité du commerce avec le Canada et fonda en 1748 la Compagnie du Canada. Il risqua sa fortune pour ravitailler la Nouvelle-France (1757–1758) malgré le blocus anglais. Juif pratiquant, syndic de la nation portugaise de Bordeaux dès 1738, il fonda la première caisse d'entraide de la communauté juive bordelaise.
