The Sarug Family

The first documented node of the Sarug family is located in Egypt, in the middle of the 16th century. A manuscript dated 1565, preserved at the British Museum (manuscript 759), was copied in Cairo for a certain Isaac Sarug; now the signature of Israel Sarug appears on this same manuscript as a later owner, which leads scholars to identify Isaac Sarug as the father — or, at the very least, a close direct relative — of Israel. This Cairene lineage of scholars with kabbalistic inclinations constitutes the first documented anchoring of the family: a family environment marked by manuscripts and by esoteric tradition, in an Egypt where Jewish life was then flourishing and diverse.

Whether we are in the presence of a family that transited through Egypt after the expulsion from Spain or of a branch whose Nile-rooted establishment predates 1492 remains uncertain. Certain sources describe Israel Sarug as "native of Egypt" (Egyptian kabbalist), a formulation that Gérard Nahon reprises in his study on the Holy Land at the time of the kabbalists — but the documentation does not allow us to settle this question of origins definitively. What is assured, on the other hand, is that the name Sarug / Saruk inscribes itself in the nebula of Sephardic Mediterranean surnames, with attested graphic variants — Sarug, Saruk, Saruq, Srugo — distributed across the communities of North Africa, Italy and the Ottoman Empire.

On the etymology of the name, several hypotheses circulate. The first ties it to a toponymic root — a place of Iberian or North African origin whose memory has been lost. The second evokes the Hebrew root s-r-g (שרג), associated with the idea of "interlacing" or "braiding" — an image that is not without resonance with the kabbalistic vocation of the most illustrious bearer of the name: the kabbalist who weaves traditions, connects circles, interlaces transmissions. These readings, however, belong more to transmitted tradition than to demonstrated etymology.

A methodological caveat must be made here. As with many Sephardic surnames, bearers with no established kinship can share the name. The "Sarug lineage" of this book is therefore less a documented genealogical tree than a constellation of bearers connected by a common name and by the radiance of their most striking representative. But the British Museum manuscript offers a real point of support: it proves the existence of a family environment marked by manuscripts and by esoteric culture, in the great city that was, throughout the 16th century, one of the intellectual capitals of Mediterranean Judaism.

This geographic distribution — from Cairo to Safed, from Venice to Amsterdam — corresponds exactly to the routes of Sephardic exile after 1492, and to the role of hubs played by cities such as Venice, Mantua, Ferrara and Amsterdam, where an open Jewish life was reconstituted. The mobility of the Sarugs, far from being a wandering, was a form of active implication in the collective life of dispersed communities: wherever one finds a member of this family, one also finds a network of study, a circle of transmission, a library in construction.

Israël Sarug is a figure whose biography remains, on many points, stubbornly uncertain. The sources converge in placing him within the period 1590–1610, that is, the generation that immediately followed the death of the Ari. His epithet "Ashkenazi" (אשכנזי), which appears in several of his writings, has raised questions: how did a kabbalist designated by this surname come to be heir to a Sephardic Cairene tradition? The most plausible answer lies in the extraordinary mingling that the Jewish world of the sixteenth century underwent: the great metropolises of the Eastern Mediterranean — Cairo, Safed, Salonica — saw families of all origins living side by side and intermarrying, and the name "Ashkenazi" could become a surname or distant inheritance without signifying an exclusive cultural identity.

The critical point of his biography is his relationship to Louria. According to the tradition he himself claimed, Sarug would have been a direct disciple of the Ari in Safed. This claim was strongly disputed by Gershom Scholem, who believed that Sarug had probably not studied under Louria in person, but had appropriated and reformulated his doctrine from writings that had reached him. Scholem formulated this judgment in a study published in 1940 in the journal Tsion, entitled "Israel Sarug, élève du Ari?" The severity of Scholem's verdict enduringly shaped the reception of Sarug in twentieth-century historiography.

This thesis was however nuanced by subsequent research. Ronit Meroz, in a study published in 1992 in the journal Da'at under the title "Israel Sarug, élève du Ari: un réexamen," reopened the case and reevaluated Sarug's place among the transmitters of Lurianic Kabbalah, suggesting a more complex relationship to the Safed circles than Scholem's judgment suggested. A plausible documentary lead lies precisely in geography: Sarug might have known Louria not in Safed but in Egypt, where the Ari resided for part of his life before joining Galilee. If Isaac Sarug, Israël's presumed father, acquired manuscripts in Cairo in 1565, and if Louria sojourned in Egypt in the years 1550–1570, a family contact — or at least a frequentation of the same Cairene circles — is not excluded. This hypothesis would partially reconcile the two positions, without definitively settling the question.

Shaul Shatil proposed, in Review of Rabbinic Judaism (Brill, 2011), an unprecedented reading that resituates Sarug's Kabbalah in an encounter between the Lurianic current and the Cordoverian tradition — that of Moïse Cordovero, the great systematizer of Safed Kabbalah before Louria. This approach suggests that Sarug was neither a simple impostor nor a pure disciple, but a thinker in his own right, capable of synthesizing two great contemporary traditions of Jewish mysticism. The tension between claimed legitimacy and historical legitimacy is constitutive of Sarug's destiny, and the honesty of the account demands that we do not obscure it: he claimed a filiation that he perhaps did not possess in the usual forms, and this choice carried within itself a fragility of which posterity bore the cost.

To understand the role of Sarug, one must recall the context of the milieu from which the doctrine he disseminated originated. In the sixteenth century, the small town of Safed, in Galilee, became the most extraordinary center of mystical creativity in Judaism, bringing together masters such as Moïse Cordovero, Joseph Caro, Salomon Alkabetz and, above all, Isaac Louria Ashkenazi, nicknamed the Ari ("the Lion"). In just a few years before his premature death in 1572, Louria elaborated a metaphysical system of considerable scope and originality. The town was also at that time a thriving economic center: Safed exported linen, silk, and high-quality fabrics to Smyrna, Istanbul and Salonique, and this material prosperity sustained the intellectual ferment of Kabbalistic circles — a reality often forgotten in favor of spiritual radiance alone.

Lurianic Kabbalah is distinguished by three great notions that became classical: tsimtsoum (the "contraction" by which the divine Infinite withdraws to make room for creation), shevirat ha-kelim (the "breaking of the vessels" that scatters sparks of divine light into the world of matter), and tiqqoun (the cosmic "repair" in which man participates through the fulfillment of the commandments and directed prayer). This doctrine gave Judaism a powerful myth of exile and redemption, in deep resonance with the historical experience of Sephardic dispersion. It was Gershom Scholem who, in his Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism, formulated this correspondence most forcefully: the extraordinary success of Lurianic Kabbalah stems from the trauma inflicted on the Jewish people by the expulsions, and from the cosmic response that the doctrine of Safed offered to this collective wound. Moshe Idel has since nuanced this reading, emphasizing the richness inherent to the Kabbalistic tradition independent of historical context — a debate that remains open.

Yet Louria wrote almost nothing himself. His doctrine was transmitted by his disciples, foremost among them Hayyim Vital, whose redactions long served as the "official" version of the master's teaching. Vital jealously guarded his manuscripts, limited their access, and organized around himself an economy of scribal scarcity. It is within this very space — that of transmitting an essentially oral doctrine, through competing and variously diffused writings — that another version could emerge, the one that would bear the name of Sarug. The plurality of transmissions is therefore not an anomaly: it is constitutive of the history of Lurianic Kabbalah. It also reflects a deep conviction of the Jewish tradition: knowledge belongs to no one, it circulates, is discussed, is commented upon, and each generation receives the right — and the duty — to reformulate what it has received.

The specificity of Sarug's teaching lies in the way he systematized and gave speculative form to the doctrine of the Ari. Where the branch transmitted by Hayyim Vital favored an exposition more directly tied to the writings of Safed, the Saruguian version introduced philosophical developments of its own, sometimes tinged with a more abstract vocabulary, on the processes preceding tsimtsoum and on the first divine emanations. His conception of tsimtsoum differs widely from all other known versions of Lurianic doctrine — a capital difference that attests that this is not a simple transcription, but an autonomous intellectual elaboration.

The most original doctrinal pivot of this version is the notion of *malbush — the primordial "garment." Even before tsimtsoum, according to Sarug, Ein Sof (the Divine Infinite) would have woven a garment made of the letters of the Torah in their precosmic state: this fabric of light and language constitutes the matrix of all future creation. The image is of considerable richness: it makes the Torah not merely a revealed Law, but an ontological principle anterior to the creative act itself. It roots the value of knowledge — and singularly of scriptural knowledge — in the very architecture of the cosmos. It is one of the ways in which the Sarug lineage participated in that age-old conviction of Judaism that study is a cosmic act, not merely an individual piety. A separate work, the Drush HaMalbush* (published in Jerusalem in 2001), develops this theme into a coherent treatise.

It is in the Limmudei Atzilut ("Teachings of Emanation") that the essence of Saruguian doctrine is concentrated. This work, now identified and referenced in the corpus of manuscripts of the tradition, contains at least three major sections: an exposition of the Saruguian version of tsimtsoum, which differs profoundly from all other known versions; a commentary on the section of the Zohar known as Sifra diTzeniuta ("Book of the Secret"); and a description of the world of Beri'ah, the angelological world neighboring that of divine emanation (Atzilut). The Limmudei Atzilut was printed in Munkacz in 1897 — but under the name of Hayyim Vital, an erroneous attribution that the editors of the time retained no doubt out of caution or ignorance, and which modern scholarship has since corrected.

Sarug's printed corpus comprises in all four attested works. Besides the Limmudei Atzilut and the Drush HaMalbush, a kabbalistic essay simply entitled "Kabbalah" was published in Joseph Delmedigo's Matzref laHokhmah (Basel, 1629); the Hanhagot Yosher (also known as Tiqqoun Qeri or Qeri Miqra) were published in Salonika in 1752; and a Kuntres Ne'im Zemirot Yisrael, a commentary on three Sabbath hymns (piyyutim) by Louria, appeared in Nowy Oleksiniec in 1767. To these printed texts are added writings circulating under other names or remaining in manuscript form, including the Shever Yosef — a summary of his fundamental teachings — and the Mayon HaChokhmah, frequently cited in the literature of Habad Hasidism. A collection of traditions on the reincarnations of souls (Gilgulei Neshamot) also circulated under the name of Menahem Azariah da Fano, revealing how porous the boundary between the master's teaching and the disciple's composition was in Italian kabbalistic circles.

This reformulation explains in part the mixed reception Sarug received. For his supporters, he brought a philosophical intelligence to the doctrine of the Ari, capable of seducing European men of letters nourished by speculation. For his detractors, he "Europeanized" a Safed doctrine unduly, or even usurped an authority of transmission that he did not possess. Between these two readings, the modern historian tends to recognize in Sarug the role of creative mediator: neither a purely faithful disciple nor a simple impostor, but an active reformulator of a tradition in motion.

It was in Northern Italy that Sarug's diffusion achieved its most brilliant success. After settling in Venice, Israël Sarug spread the doctrines of Isaac Louria Ashkenazi throughout the country. Venice was then the premier center of Hebrew publishing in Europe, a city where Ashkenazi, Sephardic, and Italian Jewish communities existed side by side in the ghetto established in 1516, and where manuscripts, learned correspondence, and itinerant masters circulated. It was in this cosmopolitan milieu that Sarug found particularly receptive ground.

Several figures distinguished themselves in the circle he led in Venice. Menahem Azariah da Fano (1548–1620), rabbi, talmudist, and prominent kabbalist, active notably in Ferrara, Reggio, and Mantua, was the most eminent among them. Tradition reports that da Fano had first acquired, at great cost, Luriannic writings transmitted through the branch of Hayyim Vital, before being profoundly marked by his encounter with Sarug — to the point that Sarug convinced him to spend large sums acquiring manuscripts of the Ari. The scale of this financial and intellectual commitment reveals how much Sarug's teaching could, in this great scholar, trigger something akin to a revelation. One sees at work a virtue that Judaism has always placed at the forefront: the capacity of an established master to move toward an itinerant transmitter, to recognize in him something authentic, and to place his own authority in service of transmission.

In this same Venetian and Italian circle also figured Isaac Fano and Aaron Berakhia ben Moïse de Modène (also called Aaron Berechiah de Modena), kabbalist and author whose work Ma'avar Yabboq, devoted to rites of mourning and death, testifies to the depth to which Sarug's teaching penetrated Italian ritual practice. Further back, Mardochée ben Juda Dato — whose name appears in sources as one of the earliest vectors of the new Kabbalah in Italy — contributed to preparing the intellectual ground on which Sarug's teaching would find roots.

The Mantuan stage deserves particular mention. Mantua, under the court of the Gonzague, was then one of the most active centers of Jewish culture in the Italian Renaissance: Hebrew printing press, cultivated patronage, constant exchanges with neighboring communities. It was in this milieu that Sarug's influence on da Fano took on its full institutional scope. Through the authority conferred upon him by his rabbinical stature, da Fano legitimized the Sarug version in the eyes of a wide learned public — a legitimation whose effects would be measured throughout the following century. The Great Book — Mantua traces in greater detail the life of this community; it suffices here to note that without Mantua, Sarug's Kabbalah might never have acquired in Italy the legitimacy that allowed it to radiate northward.

Beyond Italy, Sarug's itinerancy led him toward the communities of northern Europe. Sources attest that he taught in several German cities before joining Amsterdam, where a free Sephardic Jewish life was then being reconstituted, formed in part by former Iberian Marranos who had returned to open Judaism. This cultivated milieu, eager for spirituality, offered fertile ground for the reception of Kabbalah. It was in Amsterdam that Sarug's teaching found one of its most remarkable extensions, through the figure of Abraham Cohen de Herrera (circa 1570–circa 1635), Sarug's direct disciple in that city.

Herrera, a Sephardic thinker of the United Provinces, probably born in Spain and formed in Marranism before returning to open Judaism, endeavored to articulate Lurianic Kabbalah with Renaissance Neoplatonic philosophy. His two major works, written in Spanish — the Casa de la Divinidad ("House of the Divinity") and the Puerta del Cielo ("Gate of Heaven") — constitute the most accomplished literary and philosophical culmination of the Saruggian tradition. By rendering Kabbalah accessible in the vernacular language of Marranos who had returned to Judaism, Herrera realized the fundamental ambition of Saruggian transmission: to make mystery intelligible, to make the esoteric a tool of identity reaffiliation for uprooted communities. Through this channel, the Saruggian version — already more speculative than that of Vital — found a philosophical extension that also contributed to knowledge of Kabbalah in erudite Christian circles throughout Europe. These affiliations are presented here as probable, as documentation on transmission networks remains partial.

Sarug's itinerancy between Venice, German cities, and Amsterdam sketches in outline a map of Jewish spaces at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: centers connected by networks of manuscripts, letters, and itinerant masters, where Kabbalah circulated at the speed of the men who carried it. Sarug was one of these men — neither institutional nor sedentary, but all the more agile and penetrating. The Great Book — Amsterdam traces the life of this community in its multiple dimensions; it should be noted here that Sarug's presence in this city constitutes one of the first milestones of Amsterdamian kabbalistic life.

The fate of the Limmudei Atzilut after its composition is one of the most instructive episodes in the history of intellectual transmission in Judaism. The work circulated for a long time in manuscript networks before being printed in 1897 in Munkacz under the erroneous name of Hayyim Vital. This misattribution reveals the deep mechanics of Sarug's reception: his work had acquired sufficient authority to be deemed worthy of printing, but this authority had to be legitimated by a more established name. In other words, Sarug's text circulated and influenced, but under constrained pseudonymity.

The influence of the Limmudei Atzilut made itself felt well before its printed publication, through the path of manuscripts. It was notably on the basis of this work, incorporated in large portions, that Naftali Hertz Bakhrakh (Bacharach), a German rabbi born in Frankfurt, composed the Emeq HaMelekh ("The Valley of the King"), published in Amsterdam in 1648 — one of the most widely read kabbalistic works of the seventeenth century. Bakhrakh drew abundantly from the writings of Sarug, Joseph Solomon Delmedigo, and Shabbetai Horowitz, without always mentioning their sources. The Emeq HaMelekh enjoyed considerable circulation and was held by many — including the Habad Hasidim and the disciples of the Vilna Gaon — to be an authoritative exposition of Lurianic Kabbalah. Its influence is also evident in the system of the Ramhal, Rabbi Moshé Hayyim Luzzatto. Thus, through the medium of Bakhrakh, Sarug's teaching penetrated the most structuring currents of Ashkenazi Judaism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

In a distinct but convergent way, the Mayon HaChokhmah, attributed to Sarug, is frequently cited in Habad Hasidic literature — testifying that Sarug's very name eventually found an explicit audience in one of the most vital currents of contemporary Judaism. This dual channel — masked influence via the Emeq HaMelekh, then explicit citation in the Habad library — illustrates the complexity of a reception that was never linear, nor always just to its author.

Finally, it should be noted that the controversy surrounding the Emeq HaMelekh went beyond the circle of scholars alone. Hayyim haKohen of Aleppo, a direct disciple of Hayyim Vital, opposed vehemently the legitimacy of this work, and the Sephardim — in their great majority faithful to the Vital branch of the Lurianic tradition — excluded the Emeq HaMelekh from their kabbalistic corpus. The Sarugian version was thus more influential outside its own community of origin than within it — a constitutive paradox in Sarug's fate, as a disseminator of Sephardic doctrine in Ashkenazi circles, a transmitter between worlds that did not always recognize themselves in his legacy.

This history of diffuse and masked influence tells something essential about the Jewish tradition's relation to knowledge. In this tradition, knowledge does not belong to the one who formulates it; it belongs to the chain of transmission (shalshelet ha-kabbalah) from which it proceeds. But this collective humility can turn into individual erasure. Sarug was, in a sense, a victim of this logic: his contribution was absorbed into a larger tradition, redistributed under other authorities, and recovered his own name only at the end of sustained critical work. The correction of the attribution of the Limmudei Atzilut is, in this sense, an act of memorial justice.

Isaac Sarug (dates unknown, active around 1565) — Presumed father or direct close relative of Israël Sarug, identified through British Museum manuscript 759, dated 1565 and copied in Cairo at his request. The presence of Israël Sarug's signature on this same document as a later owner establishes a plausible line of descent. Isaac Sarug represents the first documented anchor of the lineage: a Cairo-based scholar with kabbalistic inclinations, moving in the intellectual circles of sixteenth-century Egypt. What he left behind was less a body of work than a family framework — library, manuscripts, network — in which the most famous kabbalah of the name was formed.

Israël Sarug (active between 1590 and 1610 approximately; birth and death dates unknown) — ר׳ ישראל סרוג אשכנזי, also known as the Ris (רי״ס) or Mahari Sarug (מהר״י סרוג). A kabbalah of Egyptian origin or Cairo-trained formation, he dedicated himself after the death of Isaac Louria to the propagation of Lurianic Kabbalah, first in Venice, then in northern Italy, in several German cities, and in Amsterdam. His so-called "Saruggian" version — articulated around the notion of malbush and an original conception of tsimtsum — distinguished itself from that transmitted by Hayyim Vital. His principal works are the Limmudei Atzilut, the Drush HaMalbush, the Shever Yosef, and the Mayon HaChokhmah. His legitimacy as a direct disciple of the Ari was contested by Scholem, reassessed by Meroz and Shatil.

Menahem Azariah da Fano (1548–1620) — Rabbi, talmudist and major kabbalah, active in Ferrara, Reggio and Mantua. Central figure in the penetration of Lurianic Kabbalah into the Italian Jewish world, he was persuaded by Israël Sarug to devote considerable resources to the acquisition of manuscripts of the Ari, and became the most influential intellectual relay of the Saruggian tradition in Italy. A prolific author, he left in particular talmudic and kabbalistic works, some of which were attributed or circulated in connection with Sarug's teaching — such as the Gilgulei Neshamot. His stature legitimized the Saruggian version in the eyes of a broad learned public.

Aaron Berakhia ben Moïse de Modène (c. 1575–1639) — Kabbalah and writer of the Venetian and Mantuan circle of Sarug. Disciple of Menahem Azariah da Fano and heir to Saruggian teaching, he is the author of the Ma'avar Yabboq, a collection devoted to the rites of mourning, agony, and the passage of the soul — a devotional work that enjoyed immense circulation in the Italian Jewish world and beyond. He testifies to the depth to which Sarug's teaching penetrated ritual practice, transforming esoteric speculation into a guide to life and death.

Abraham Cohen de Herrera (c. 1570–c. 1635) — רבי אברהם כהן בן דוד דה-הירירה, also known as Alonso Nunez de Herrera. Sephardic philosopher and kabbalah, probably born in Spain, trained in Marranism before returning to open Judaism in Amsterdam. Direct disciple of Israël Sarug, he was the thinker who brought the Saruggian tradition to its most elaborate philosophical expression, articulating Lurianic Kabbalah with Renaissance Neoplatonism in his two major works in Spanish, the Casa de la Divinidad and the Puerta del Cielo. These works contributed to making Kabbalah known in the learned Christian circles of Europe.

Naftali Hertz Bakhrakh (Bacharach) (c. 1600–after 1648) — German rabbi, born in Frankfurt. Author of the Emeq HaMelekh (Amsterdam, 1648), one of the most widely read kabbalistic works of the seventeenth century, founded essentially on Sarug's Limmudei Atzilut as well as writings by Delmedigo and Shabbetai Horowitz. Through this intermediary, Saruggian teaching penetrated Ashkenazi Judaism and influenced currents as diverse as Habad Hasidism, the disciples of the Vilna Gaon, and the system of the Ramhal. He is the principal — and least visible — vector of Sarug's underground influence on two centuries of Jewish thought.

Mardochée ben Juda Dato (c. 1527–c. 1601) — Jewish kabbalah and poet of Italy, active in Mantua and in the communities of northern Italy. Mentioned among the first vectors of the new Kabbalah of Safed in Italy, he belongs to the generation that prepared the intellectual and communal ground on which Sarug's teaching was to take root. His dates and work remain partially documented, and his precise role in the Saruggian chain of transmission remains to be established with greater certainty.

At the end of this journey, the Sarug lineage appears less as a genealogy in the classical sense — a documented tree of ancestors and descendants — than as an intellectual trajectory embodied by a dominant figure, Israël Sarug, whose name encompasses a network, a method, an ambition of transmission. His name, Sephardic or Mediterranean in every fiber, is inscribed in the great movement of dispersion that followed 1492; his work, in the exceptional moment of Safed and in the adventure of its European dissemination.

Several teachings emerge. First, Sarug's history recalls that great doctrines are always transmitted through mediators, and that these mediators are never mere copyists: they reformulate, inflect, create. The Limmudei Atzilut, printed in 1897 under the erroneous name of Hayyim Vital, then restored to its true author by critical scholarship, is the most eloquent sign of this paradox: a major work, circulating in disguise, influencing entire swaths of kabbalistic tradition underground — from the circle of da Fano to the Emeq HaMelekh of Bakhrakh, from the Hasidism of Habad to the disciples of the Gaon of Vilna, to the system of Ramhal — without the name of its author always being spoken. The historiographical debate — from Scholem's severity to Meroz's rereadings, to recent syntheses by Shatil — shows that Sarug's status remains an open question, and that honesty demands that we not pronounce judgment beyond what the archival record permits. The role of Italy under Menahem Azariah da Fano and the Netherlands of Abraham Cohen de Herrera attests that Lurianic Kabbalah was, thanks to men like Sarug, a European as much as an Oriental phenomenon.

Among all the values that Judaism has carried through the centuries, the Sarug lineage embodied one with singular intensity: knowledge as cosmic vocation. Not knowledge as possession or as power, but as an act of transmission, of reformulation, of opening. The malbush — that primordial garment woven of letters — is the very image of a deep conviction: that the Torah, before being a law, is a fabric of meaning that precedes and sustains all creation. In disseminating this idea from Egypt to Italy, from Germany to Holland, by inscribing it in works that crossed the centuries under other names before recovering their own, Israël Sarug and his lineage participated in a gesture that the collective memory of Israel has repeated, from exile to exile: to transform dispersion into transmission, to make wandering a seed.

The Sarug lineage thus bequeaths to the Jewish world and to its history of ideas an exemplary testimony: that of the fecundity of margins, of mediators and reformulators, whose contested legitimacy was the very price of their influence — and whose name, long erased behind that of others, remains nonetheless inscribed, like the letters of the malbush, in the very fabric of the tradition they helped to weave.
