Introduction

The surname Mondolfi belongs to the large family of Italian Jewish names of toponymic origin—that is, formed from a place name. It appears in the reference inventory of Samuele Schaerf, I cognomi degli ebrei d'Italia (Florence, 1925), a work that remains to this day the foundational register of Jewish surnames in the Italian peninsula. Its kinship with the closely related form Mondolfo—better documented, notably through the figure of the philosopher Rodolfo Mondolfo (1877–1976)—strengthens the hypothesis of a common geographical root: a village in the Marches, situated on the Adriatic hills between Pesaro and Ancona, whose name traveled for centuries with its Jewish bearers.

The history of this lineage can be reconstructed only by inscribing it within the larger fabric of Italian Judaism: a Judaism among the oldest in Western Europe, present in Rome since Antiquity, and whose communities of the North-Central peninsula—the Marches, Umbria, Emilia, Venetia, Tuscany—shaped, from the Middle Ages to Emancipation, a singular onomastics in which place of origin serves as a marker of family identity. The method adopted here is cautious: lacking nominative archives directly accessible at the moment of writing, the present work scrupulously distinguishes what pertains to documented fact, from probable deduction and assumed editorial conjecture.

As this narrative unfolds, one dimension will impose itself of its own accord: through documented or highly probable facts—the trade exercised under the condotta, attachment to the italki rite, care for the stranger in Ancona, the philosophical commitment of the Mondolfo branch, resistance to annihilation—the Mondolfi lineage embodied, among the virtues that Jewish tradition carries through the centuries, some of the most essential. These virtues will never be posed as postulate: they will be born, in this book, from the fact itself.
